Paperman
2016
A large piece of paper is cut out to a paperman. I then start to animate his movements. He comes alive and slowly starts to consume himself – starting with his feet. The sound of noisy chewing indicates pleasure in what he is tasting. He continues to consume himself until his face is curled up and eaten through his mouth. He is now literally inside out. I then placed the curled piece of paper in the cut-out silhouette, where it looks like a curly snake or shit. The performance can be interpreted as many things; a destructive self-obsession, greediness or to be self-tasting. The performance is also a kind of self-portrait; both literally due to the outlining of my body but also due to the title ‘Paperman’: Can I work too much and become too absorbed by the material, paper, until the level where I get lost in it without the ability to see anything else?
